Women’s Empowerment in India through Agriculture: A Qualitative Analysis
Abstract
The empowerment of women in India's agricultural sector has emerged as a critical issue, given the persistent gender disparities and unequal access to resources, education, and opportunities. While women comprise a significant portion of the agricultural workforce, their contributions are often undervalued, and they continue to face systemic barriers that hinder their full participation in agricultural development. Despite these challenges, various initiatives by the Indian government and non-governmental organizations have been introduced to address these inequities. These initiatives focus on enhancing women’s access to essential resources, including education, training, financial support, and agricultural technologies, thereby facilitating their active engagement in agricultural decision-making processes. This paper critically reviews the current status of women in agriculture, highlighting key challenges such as limited access to land, credit, and extension services. It further examines the impact of policies and programs designed to empower women, evaluating their effectiveness in promoting gender equality and economic sustainability in the sector. The paper concludes by proposing recommendations for further policy interventions that could enhance the empowerment of women in agriculture, ultimately fostering more inclusive and sustainable rural development in India.
